Bullying is Whack, Help Prevent It
By Kassidy Ravina
Bullying doesn’t just happen in school. It’s everywhere, and in many forms such as excluding, threats, rumors, intimidation, and physical actions.
Bullying uses dominance over people perceived to be weak. It is based on hurting a victim. Aggression and repetitive actions play a key role.
Why do we bully, and where do we learn it?
A common reason children bully may be because of a lack of attention at home. But in some cases the reasons lead to topics such as insecurity. Meaning, bullies feel powerless or don’t like themselves.
Social media platforms can also contribute to the problem. Local softball coach Sharon Trusky says, “They have no further than to look at their own doorsteps and on their own TVs, phones, and tablets. Social media has allowed us to be closer to others, but it can also permit rude, obnoxious, and ignorant comments to fly virtually unchecked.”
So, how do we prevent bullying? Helping kids to understand bullying and all of its effects is a great way to start. Encourage children, or even adults, to talk to a trusted person.
Encourage others to do what they love!
Don’t forget that adults are a kid’s role model!
