At only 26, shooting guard James Harden of the Houston Rockets is already an elite basketball player. He grew up in Los Angeles and attended Arizona State University. He has been named NBA All-Star three times, All-NBA First Team two times, and NBA Sixth Man of the Year to name a few of his achievements.

Those accomplishments speak volumes in terms of Harden’s success as a basketball player, but his commitment to excellence isn’t limited to athletics. Harden is very giving and kindhearted off the court. He shows this side of him through various charitable acts of kindness such as hosting five Houston families to a shopping spree during the holiday season and donating money to a veterans hospital in Virginia.

I interviewed Harden for Coal Cracker with some help from my uncle Mike Rhoades, Head Coach of the Rice University Owls, based in Houston. We explored Harden’s life on and off the court, and learned about his favorite food and who most inspires him.

Coal Cracker: If you could be anything besides a pro athlete, what would you be?

James Harden: I enjoy music and would probably be doing something in the music business.
