I love all the colors of peacock feathers when they fan them out. They are beautiful animals!

I wanted to learn more about them so I did some online research at ScienceKids.com and Animals.NationalGeographic.com.

Peacocks are birds in the family of pheasants. Actually, only the males are known as peacocks and the females are called peahens. Together, they are called peafowl. A baby peacock is called a peachick.

There are three types of peafowl: the Indian, the Green, and the Congo. Typically, peacocks live up to 15-20 years.

They are known best for their amazing eye-spotted tail feathers or plumage. Peacocks open out their tail feathers to attract other peafowl. They honk at a high pitch.

The male’s tail is about 7 feet long and the female’s tail is about 3 feet long. Their tail is about 60% of their body weight.

Peacocks are not native to Pennsylvania, but back in April 2015 WNEP-TV reported that there was a peacock sighting in the Poconos. One had been hit by a car while crossing the road in Snydersville, PA. It wasn’t badly hurt.

That bird was probably someone’s pet. It was taken to the Animal Welfare Society of Monroe County to be reunited with its owner or relocated to a new home.
