The Story of Red and Green

Have you ever wondered why we use red and green colors to celebrate Christmas? Well, I have an answer. It’s a very good story to tell. My grandma, Elaine Souchak, always tells it before we eat our dessert on Christmas.

Most people think red and green might relate to Santa and his elves. But, we actually use the color red to represent holly berries and the red apple in the Garden of Eden.

You’ll probably see holly bushes growing around Christmas time. Adam and Eve found a red apple in the Garden of Eden, the red represents the fall of Adam when he bit into the apple.

We use green for one reason. The green represents the evergreen tree that we decorate at Christmas. Evergreen trees are in the woods all year long and they never lose their color. The evergreen tree represents that God will love us forever. It also means we all have an everlasting life. We may go to heaven when we die, but our spirit is everlasting.

After my grandma tells this story, we have red and green Jell-O cake. She uses red and green to show us how important these colors are.

We always say we eat the cake to celebrate Jesus’s birthday. This is a great tradition and if you want to celebrate a wonderful Christmas, follow this recipe!

Christmas Rainbow Poke Cake

1 package white cake mix

1 package raspberry Jell-O

1 package lime Jell-O

2 cups boiling water

1 container Cool Whip

Prepare cake mix as directed. Pour batter into two round eight- or nine-inch pans. Bake as directed. Cool for 10 minutes. Remove from pans and cool completely. Place cake layers back into the two clean pans. Prick each layer with utility fork at half-inch intervals.

Pour the raspberry Jell-O and 1 cup of boiling water into a bowl; stir until dissolved. Spoon raspberry Jell-O over one cake layer. Repeat with the lime Jell-O and the other cake layer. Refrigerate three to four hours.

Dip one of the cake pans into warm water for 10 seconds, and invert onto a plate. Gently shake the pan to loosen the cake. Spread this layer with one cup of Cool Whip. Remove the remaining cake layer the same as the first, and invert it onto the top of the first layer. Frost it with the remaining Cool Whip and refrigerate.
