In Mahanoy City, locals and visitors celebrated the canonization of Mother Teresa of Calcutta as a saint of the Roman Catholic Church on September 4th.
The event was special to many Coal Region people because Mother Teresa visited Mahanoy City back in June of 1995, and attended mass at what was then Saint Joseph’s parish. Today, the church is known as Saint Teresa of Calcutta parish.
During the recent celebration, the children and teens of Saint Teresa of Calcutta parish walked in procession from St. Cecilia’s Chapel carrying signs and flowers to honor St. Teresa. Pictured above are Meghan Macleary, left, and Cealinn McGroarty.

The children of the parish placed flowers before the new picture of St. Teresa of Calcutta.

Local residents were interviewed by WBRE-TV and other media about the canonization and local celebration.

Bishop John Barres talked with people in the congregation before mass.

One of the Missionaries of Charity Sisters, who are based at Saint Teresa of Calcutta parish, contributed a reading during mass.

Bishop John Barres was the celebrant at a Mass of Thanksgiving for the canonization of St. Teresa of Calcutta. Concelebrants were Rev. Kevin Gallagher, Deacon David Henninger, and priests from all over the Diocese of Allentown.
