Walking Paths in the Works

Regular physical activity has health benefits. Being active can reverse normal aging-related memory loss, delay the development of Alzheimer’s and reduce risk factors for such diseases as obesity, heart disease, diabetes and asthma. It can also decrease stress and anxiety and prevent depression.

Yet, despite the proven benefits of regular physical activity, most Americans are not sufficiently active. Inactivity is particularly prominent in rural settings, with residents being only half as active as their urban counterparts (Walk Works, 2011).

Mahanoy City has been selected to participate in a Walk Works grant from the University of Pittsburgh Center for Public Health Practice that will support the planning and implementation of three walking paths and walking groups in the borough in the next year.

A planning group is meeting on the first and third Mondays of the month, from 6:00 – 7:00 pm, at the Mahanoy Senior Center at 138 West Centre St. The meetings and grant are facilitated by Schuylkill County’s VISION. Everyone is invited to attend.
